Power Step Installation Notes – 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4
Bench Prep First: We found it much easier to pre-assemble the motors and covers on the bench. This also includes installing the butt connectors for the LED lights and stripping back the wire looms in advance. Prepping on the bench saves time and hassle during the install.
Linkage Mounting Measurements: While it’s possible to mount the motor and idler linkages directly to the truck first, it’s more efficient to pre-measure and loosely assemble them onto the steps.
For the front linkage, measure 5” inward from the end of the step board and mount it loosely to the roller pins.
For the rear motor linkage, measure either 16" or 33" inward, depending on your specific truck configuration.
On this AT4, the correct hole placement was 33" from the end of the cab.
Mounting Steps to Truck: With linkages loosely attached to the board, hold the step up to the truck and install the two bolts per linkage. Once aligned, tighten everything down securely.
Wiring the Controller & Power:
As shown in the video we shared, we use the third hot terminal for power.
The controller is slid down the side of the battery and secured to the battery hold-down bar.
To run the harness across the engine bay, remove the plastic pop rivets, insert a zip tie, then reinstall the rivets to secure the wire in place cleanly.
Wire Routing Tips:
Avoid hot components like the engine and exhaust.
Run the wires along the outside of the frame above the cab mounts.
Do NOT zip tie the wire looms to the parking brake line — use a wire fish tool for best results.
Interior Wiring:
When routing the two purple wires into the cab, tape them together, run them under the carpet, and connect them to the OBD-II plug supplied in the kit.
Final Steps:
Wire in the LED lights, making sure to clean the mounting surface so the adhesive sticks well.
Zip tie all wires securely and keep everything neat.
Reinstall the fuse, test the system, and you’re good to go!
